Abrasive Flow Machining (AFM) with an Extrude Hone 77A is a specialized finishing process used to improve the surface quality of intricate or hard-to-reach areas of workpieces. It involves the controlled flow of a viscous abrasive media through the internal passages or cavities of a component to remove material and achieve a desired surface finish.
In AFM, a mixture of an abrasive medium, such as silicon carbide or aluminum oxide, and a viscoelastic carrier material, such as a polymer or oil, is pressurized and forced through the workpiece using hydraulic or pneumatic pressure. The abrasive particles flow through the internal channels of an Extrude Hone 77A, effectively smoothing out rough surfaces, removing burrs, and polishing the workpiece.
The unique advantage of AFM is its ability to reach complex geometries and areas that are difficult to access using traditional machining methods. It can improve surface finish, deburr edges, round sharp corners, and enhance part performance by reducing friction or improving fluid flow characteristics.
AFM is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and mold making. The Extrude Hone 77A is particularly beneficial for applications involving critical components with tight tolerances and intricate shapes, where traditional machining methods may be ineffective or impractical.
