What is Honing?
Honing is a low-velocity abrading process that allows for excellent size, geometry, and surface finish control of cylindrical bores. Honing machines use several flat abrasive stones arranged around a mandrel. These stones then rotate and reciprocate through the interior of the cylinder to create a finishing pattern within the cylindrical bore.
Horizontal Hones
These hones are oriented horizontally. The abrasive stones used on these machines are made to expand and contract as they move in and out of the workpiece. Vertical Hones
These hones are oriented vertically. Similar to the horizontal hones, the abrasive stones on these machines are also made to expand and contract as they move in and out of the workpiece. Vertical-spindle honing machines are used especially for larger, heavier work. Vertical honing machines are also made with multiple spindles so that several holes may be machined at once. Single Pass Hones
These hones allow for the workpiece to remain fixed. The hone itself is attached to a reciprocating cylinder that moves the hone in and out of the workpiece. The single-pass tool is an expandable diamond-plated sleeve on a tapered arbor or a fixed-sized tool coated with diamond abrasive particles. The sleeve is expanded only during setup and no adjustments are necessary during the honing process. Unlike conventional honing, these hones are able to complete the honing process in one pass through the bore. This process is so accurate and consistent that honed bores often do not require gaging.
